چکیده
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the epidemiology of ankle fractures surgically treated at the Instituto de Ortopedia e Traumatologia do Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade de São Paulo. METHODS Medical records of patients admitted with foot and ankle fractures between 2006 and 2011 were revised. Seventy three ankle fractures that underwent surgical treatment were identified. The parameters analyzed included age, gender, injured side, AO and Gustilo & Anderson classification, associated injuries, exposure, need to urgent treatment, time to definitive treatment and early post-operative complications. STUDY DESIGN retrospective epidemiological study. RESULTS Male gender was predominant among subjects and the mean age was 27.5 years old. Thirty nine fractures resulted from traffic accidents and type B fracture according to AO classification was the most common. Twenty one were open fractures and 22 patients had associated injuries. The average time to definitive treatment was 6.5 days. Early post-operative complications were found in 21.3% of patients. CONCLUSIONS Ankle fractures treated in a tertiary hospital of a large city in Brazil affect young people victims of high-energy accidents and present significant rates of associated injuries and post-operative complications. Level of Evidence IV, Cases Series.

Reliability of Postoperative Radiographies in Ankle Fractures
Background: The accuracy of reduction of ankle fractures using postoperative plain radiographies (x-ray) remainswidely controversial. Some authors have demonstrated that postoperative computed tomography (CT) scan can beuseful for these patients. In current study, the efficacy of x-rays after fixation of ankle fractures was investigated basedon the CT scan findings.Metho...
متن کاملEpidemiology of Joint Dislocations and Ligamentous/ Tendinous Injuries among 2,700 Patients: Five-year Trend of a Tertiary Center in Iran
Background: The epidemiology of traumatic dislocations and ligamentous/tendinous injuries is poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence and distribution of various dislocations and ligamentous/tendinous injuries in a tertiary orthopedic hospital in Iran. Methods: Musculoskeletal injuries in an academic tertiary health care center in Tehran February 2005 to October 201...
متن کاملSyndesmotic Malreduction after Ankle ORIF; Is Radiography Sufficient?
Background: Ankle fractures, especially those resulting from external rotation mechanisms are associated with injury to the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis. Some authors have recommended performing CT scanning after open ankle surgery to evaluate the reduction of syndesmosis. In this current study, we aimed to investigate the sensitivity of plain radiography in diagnosing syndesmosis malreduc...
متن کاملDoes the normal four steps weight-bearing rule predict the need for radiography in cases of blunt ankle trauma?
Background: Ankle injuries are one of the most common complaints of patients presenting to emergency departments (ED). The Ottawa ankle rules (OAR) was introduced to help physicians to decide who may require x-ray for blunt injuries. The present study aimed at validating the four steps weight-bearing rule of OAR as a sole criterion. Methods: This prospective observational study wa...
متن کاملMinimally Invasive Surgical Approach to Distal Fibula Fractures: A Technique Tip
Wound complications following ankle fracture surgery are a major concern. Through the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques some of these complications can be mitigated. Recent investigations have reported on percutaneous fixation of distal fibula fractures demonstrating similar radiographic and functional outcomes to traditional open approaches. The purpose of this manuscript is to ...
